I’m doctor of physical therapy who has worked with people who have Parkinson’s Disease (PD) for over 10 years. Since starting my career, I have become more and more focused on PD because I truly love the changes I can help people make. It is so rewarding to help someone start moving better in just a few sessions! As a PT, I have worked in many settings from outpatient to home health and skilled nursing. Over and over, my clients have worked hard in therapy with me and made huge gains in their ability to walk, balance, and live their lives. The traditional therapy model allowed me to help all levels of people, but after discharge, they would lose their gains without someone pushing them to improve. Watching this happen hundreds of times led me to try something a little different—Parkinson’s-specific personal training. My goal is to implement PD-specific exercise programs for people who are motivated to help themselves. With this model, I can help folks who have been discharged from therapy who can still benefit from PD-specific exercise. Exercising regularly with activities specifically for Parkinson’s can help slow progression of the disease--who wouldn't want to keep that going?!
Our fitness sessions are all provided by Dr.Johanna Murrell. She received her doctorate degree in physical therapy from East Carolina University. Just fill out the contact us page, call, or email, and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Each participant receives a free 15-20 minute phone consultation with Johanna Murrell, DPT where we can discuss you specific needs and goals for training. At this time, we can discuss your level of ability, any doctor recommendations, and how we can help you best!
This depends on your level of ability. For some, we are moving fast outside or exercising on the beach. A lot can also be done in the middle of the living room! For others we might be working on pickleball speed drills or keeping balance while moving in the yard. We can also find creative and fun ways to challenge those who need to be seated or use a walker.
Not for training. We do offer a free 15-20 minute consultation call to discuss how PD exercise can help you! Additionally, Dr. Johanna provides a new diagnosis consultation service to help answer questions, find community resources, and provide general information.
No, we'll bring everything you need! Parkinson's exercise is most focused on large movements and body awareness, so big equipment isn't really needed. We generally use things like a ball, a therapy band, a hula hoop, or an athletic step in a client's living room or kitchen. If you have equipment at home, let your trainer know--we love to integrate what you already have as well!
